2-5 May, 2016

The 49th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) took place in Frankfurt, Germany, and convened stakeholders to discuss a range of key topics in relation to sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific. Topics included clean energy and climate change, information and communications technology, and the role of technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

TVET was the focus of several sessions and discussion in the meeting, including the ADB Private Sector-CNBC Awards as well as a panel discussion on Quality Employment and a Better Workplace. Mr Shyamal Majumdar, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC, was part of panel on Empowerment through Technical and Vocational Education and Training: Innovative Financing Options. The panel discussion, organized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), looked at the growing importance of development cooperation in financing TVET and questioned how skills development for the labour market can be promoted and sustained. The discussion looked at government and private sector contributions to TVET, explored incentives and alternative approaches to financing, and presented examples of cooperation in the TVET sector in the Asia and the Pacific region.

One of the outcomes of the 49th Annual Meeting was the signing of the “Frankfurt Declaration” in which the ADB and the BMZ agreed to join forces to promote climate actions and TVET in the region. The Declaration is also a step forward towards the launching of an Asia Climate Finance Facility in 2017 that will encourage public and private sector investment in climate change mitigation and adaptation in support of the goals of the COP 21 Paris Agreement.
