BIBB President visits UNESCO-UNEVOC

On 6 November 2014, Professor Dr Friedrich Hubert Esser, President of the German Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), visited the offices of UNESCO-UNEVOC at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany. The visit served to reinforce and strengthen the partnership between BIBB and UNESCO-UNEVOC and it made evident the vast potential for synergy and collaboration between the two organizations.

Shyamal Majumdar, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC, received Dr Esser and pointed out that the significance of his visit was twofold: first, Dr Esser represents a small segment of distinguished people who have risen to the top ranks of public service through technical and vocational education and training. Dr Esser began his career as a baker and utilized the strength of Germany’s vocational education and training system to equip himself with the skills and abilities required to eventually serve as President of a Federal Institute of Germany. “Dr Esser”, Majumdar explained, “is a living example that TVET can fulfil dreams and noble aspirations.” Second, Dr Esser’s visit was significant because UNESCO-UNEVOC occupies an office space which was formerly the headquarters of the BIBB. That these two organizations even shared a physical workspace further demonstrates the unity of purpose that animates their mission.

During his visit, Dr Esser was introduced to the work of UNESCO-UNEVOC, in particular its function as a clearinghouse, and its online services, including the e-Forum, Promising Practices, the TVETipedia glossary and the World TVET Database. Dr Esser deeply acknowledged and appreciated the work UNESCO-UNEVOC carries out to reinvigorate TVET around the world through its worldwide network of UNEVOC Centres. The importance of Greening TVET and Youth and Skills was also discussed as a follow-up to UNESCO-UNEVOC's Global Forum.

Further underscoring the spirit of collaboration that his visit fostered, Dr Esser mentioned in his closing remarks that “coming together represents the beginning of the journey, planning together represents progress and acting together represents success.”

Dagmar Winzier and Uta Roth, experts on loan to UNESCO-UNEVOC from BIBB, were both present at the meeting.
