Cross-Regional Cooperation: UNEVOC Network in Action

Under the lead of Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, Canada, eight UNEVOC Centres representing all regions of the UNEVOC Network initiated a collaborative research project on Community Engagement. As the first activity of the collaborative research, this workshop is conducted in Carleton-sur-Mer Quebec, Canada from 27-29 November 2017.

During the workshop, the partnering UNEVOC Centres will exchange their views regarding TVET oriented community engagement in their regions, and develop a research framework that enables a comparative evaluation and analysis of different forms of community engagement across the regions. The research will also identify and analyse success-stories and highlight the factors instrumental in their success.

During the inauguration of the workshop, Jens Liebe, Senior Programme Expert at UNESCO-UNEVOC, delivered an online presentation framing the concept of collaborative research in the UNEVOC Network and provided some reflections on the importance of Community Engagement.

About the Collaborative Research Project

Through this Collaborative Research Project on Community Engagement, the partners will evaluate the levels and types of community engagement at TVET institutions in different regions, covering low- to high-income socio-economic profiles.

Its goal is to produce an implementation-oriented publication that gives guidance to other TVET institutions interested in strengthening their community engagement. This publication will provide answers to questions, such as:

  • What is community engagement? What shape can it take?
  • Why is community engagement useful in the context of TVET?
  • What are the benefits derived from an institutions' community engagement for the institution, students, and the community?
  • What are examples and results of exemplary community engagement?
  • What can be done to foster greater community engagement?
  • What are challenges to community engagement? How can these be overcome?
  • What are similarities, differences and challenges in different regions?
Based on comparative analysis of different cases, the answers to the above questions will reveal relevant information on how educational institutions in different settings manage to adapt community engagement initiatives to different socio-economic contexts.
