UNESCO & UNESCO-UNEVOC: Linking Intangible Cultural Heritage & TVET

February 23, 2018

UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage Section, UNESCO-UNEVOC and the German National Commission for UNESCO, organized a workshop in Bonn on the 23rd February 2018. This workshop aimed at knowledge exchange between the Intangible Cultural Heritage Section and UNESCO-UNEVOC, while exploring possibilities of integrating UNEVOC Network in associated activities.

UNESCO's Capacity Building and Heritage Policy Unit is engaged in highlighting the role of intangible cultural heritage as an important factor in maintaining cultural diversity. According to UNESCO, intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is made up of oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe, and traditional craftsmanship knowledge and techniques.

At this workshop, UNESCO-UNEVOC introduced the participants to its work related to skills development, heritage and the UNEVOC Network. Various avenues of prospective collaboration were also discussed during the workshop, especially those where intangible cultural heritage and skills development through TVET could be mutually reinforce eachother. The discussions also explored ways to engage UNEVOC Centres in future programmes in this area, particularly those engaging directly with local communities and facilitating access between formal TVET institutions with the traditional craftspeople in their respective contexts. UNESCO-UNEVOC, in collaboration with the UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage Section, will also conduct a survey to map out the interest of UNEVOC Centres globally in this area.

This workshop was attended by:

1. Ms. Susanne Schnuttgen, Chief - UNESCO Capacity Building and Heritage Policy Unit
