Greening TVET: Towards a Sustainable Vocational Education

UNEVOC Centres unite in a workshop for sustainable development

27–29 June, 2017, Metepec, Mexico

The National College of Technical and Professional Education (CONALEP), in collaboration with the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BiBB) in Germany, a UNEVOC Centre, and UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre organized a three-day workshop to raise awareness on the need to make professional and technical training more attuned to sustainable development imperatives.

The workshop, entitled Greening TVET: Towards a Sustainable Vocational Education, convened over 15 staff from CONALEP, as well as representatives from four UNEVOC Centres from the region. In addition to CONALEP, the following UNEVOC Centres participated:

1. Federal University of Technology – Paraná (UTFPR), Brazil

2. National Council for the Federal Network of Vocational, Scientific and Technology Education Institutions (CONIF), Brazil

3. Duoc UC, Chile

A representative from the Technical Institute for Training and Productivity, Instituto Técnico de Capacitación y Productividad (Intecap), also took part in the hands-on workshop.

The workshop responded to calls made by UNEVOC Centres during a UNEVOC Network cluster meeting in Paraguay for more experience sharing in Latin America about greening technical and vocational education and training (TVET) initiatives in the region. The workshop also presented an opportunity for UNEVOC Centres to learning more about the forthcoming Greening Technical and Vocational Education and Training: a practical guide for institutions publication.

The publication advocates for a whole-institutional approach to the greening process, and with this in mind the workshop:

1. Helped explain the international sustainability agenda (Sustainable Development Goals and Education for Sustainable Development etc.);

2. Showed how institutions could undertake greening research activities;

3. Gave ideas how to green the institutional culture, community and the workplace;

4. Identified areas to green the curriculum and training.

Greening TVET is an important topic in the region. A recent virtual conference hosted on the TVeT Forum showed urbanization, challenges in the education system, and the inability of the TVET sector to cater to the needs of the industry both posed a problem to TVET institutions to contribute to sustainable development, and provided an opportunity.

Addressing the occasion, Ms. Ken Barrientos, Programme Officer at UNESCO-UNEVOC, stressed this when she said:

Institutions must be able to drive sustainable practices in day to day operations and support the realization of a new thinking in TVET – which is to develop qualified workforce who are competent in their trade or vocations, and at the same time, understand the environmental risks in their profession or trade.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key national and regional actors including Ms Candita Victoria Gil Jimenez, General Director of CONALEP, as well as Mr Adolfo Ayuso Audry, General Director of the ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ of the Presidency of the Mexican Republic.

At the end of the workshop UNEVOC Centres agreed on an action plan to start the greening process in their institutions, and called for more experience sharing.
