Conference on New Emerging Technology Skills in Chennai, India

UNESCO-UNEVOC participated in the conference on "New Emerging Technology Skills. A Networking Platform to promote new Technology Skills for the emerging knowledge economy", which took place on 16-17 February 2015 in Chennai, India.

New emerging technology (NET) fields offer opportunities for skill-based employment and career growth for young women and men at the entry level of the skills pyramid. However, for a significant number of youth in India, these new skills development opportunities are a distant dream. The European Union (EU) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, have funded the initiative on “Incubating New Emerging Technology (NET) Skills by creating sustainable models of NET Skill Packages”. This project aims to bridge development gaps by focusing on new emerging technology skills for the benefit of marginalized and vulnerable youth in the disadvantaged regions of India.

Programme Specialist Katerina Ananiadou presented UNESCO-UNEVOC’s work, the UNEVOC Network and knowledge management services to a large audience of mainly grass root-level organizations, working primarily in the informal skills development sector in India.

The invitation to the conference came after a visit that representatives of the three organizations paid to UNESCO-UNEVOC as part of their study tour in Europe in December 2014.

The main purpose of the conference was the dissemination of the outcomes of the project, which is implemented by three institutions: Tiruchirappalli Regional Engineering College – Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (TREC-STEP) is the lead implementing agency, supported by Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology (VIB), West Bengal, and the Science and Technology Park (STP) in Pune as partners.

Three state-of-the-art NET Skills Nodal Centres were established in Tamil Nadu, in West Bengal and in Maharashtra. They are the prime hubs for dissemination of new emerging technology skills in the targeted regions. The three institutions focus on the following training areas: modern appliances maintenance; agricultural and aquatic bio-technology; and ICT, energy and the environment.
