25-28 October, 2016

Daejeon and Seoul, South Korea

10 technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions around Southern, East and Southeast Asia met in Daejeon and Seoul for a four-day workshop to discuss recent international and regional developments and key issues related to sustainable development and youth employability in TVET.

The workshop convened mid-level government officials and policy-makers responsible for, or closely involved in, the development of TVET policies in nine countries. The sessions tackled the following issues: developing policies for greening TVET; offering TVET for disadvantaged groups; building education-industry cooperation; enhancing youth employability through apprenticeship; and understanding the impact of smart technology and using ICT in TVET. The engaging discussions that took place highlighted common regional challenges such as greening the curriculum or developing common qualifications framework or quality assurance mechanisms.

Among the 10 institutions represented, 9 were UNEVOC centres including 2 cluster coordinators (Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission of Sri Lanka and KRIVET of South Korea). The workshop provided an opportunity for UNEVOC Centres to learn about recent activities in the UNEVOC Network including the organization of the two-week UNEVOC TVET Leadership Programme (Bonn, Germany, October 2016), as well as the sub-Regional Forum on Quality Assurance which should take place in February 2017 in Sri Lanka.

An important dimension of the Network is experience and expertise sharing and to this end Jean Hautier, Programme Assistant at UNESCO-UNEVOC, presented an overview of the International Centre’s activities in the area of knowledge management and development. One of the cornerstones of UNESCO-UNEVOC’s online services is the Promising Practices Database, and the meeting informed those attending how they could contribute to the service.

A Network meeting reviewed the activities undertaken by the various institutions and provided a platform to discuss the development of regional and international guidelines for quality and international mobility in TVET, the greening of TVET institutions, and increased knowledge sharing among institutions.

The workshop was organized by the Korean Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET), a UNEVOC Network member since 1998. The KRIVET is also the East and Southeast Asia cluster coordinator of the Network. The following UNEVOC Centres were represented:
