Symposium on Recognizing Green Skills in Non-formal Learning Settings

The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in Hamburg, Germany, will host an international symposium jointly organized by the Institute and the Education University of Hong Kong (EduHK), a UNEVOC Centre. The symposium will focus on recognizing green skills in non-formal learning settings, and use comparative studies in Asia to foster experience and knowledge sharing.

The invitation only symposium is to be a follow up of the event held Hong Kong in August 2015 on the inclusion of green competencies in the recognition of prior learning. Scholars from UNEVOC Centres in the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR, Nepal, and the Philippines will attend this year’s event, together with experts from Bangladesh, Malaysia, India and Kazakhstan. The symposium will discuss the green skills agenda in non-formal settings, and will use eight case studies conducted in the Asia and Pacific region to highlight issues related to the inclusion of green skills in the recognition, validation and accreditation (RVA) of non-formal and informal learning. The discussion will also cover principles that governments can adopt to establish their models and include green skills in RVA frameworks.

The results of this joint work will be published as an open access book in 2017 by Springer. The book will address the significance of acquiring relevant technical and vocational skills for the greening of the economy in the key industries covered in the study, and will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in particular, TVET’s contribution to the improvement of environmental performance and the sustainable development of economies. It will highlight the recognition, validation and accreditation of green skills as an important component of lifelong learning within the framework of the SDGs.
