The Virtual World in TVET

On 14 March 2008, Warren Sheaffer (St. Paul College, USA) and Norbert Fuhrmann (Felix-Fechenbach-Berufskolleg, Detmold, Germany) presented a discussion of the application of Massive Multiplayer Online Virtual Environments in the area of TVET at the premises of the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre in Bonn.

The lecture, entitled Immersive Learning for Technical and Vocational Education: “Open Source and Open to the World” – From e-Learning to v-Learning, reviewed and demonstrated current developments and applications, with an emphasis on the potential of Online Virtual Environments (MMOVES) as a delivery platform for low-cost, high-quality educational opportunity on a world-wide basis.

In particular, initiatives of St. Paul College (in cooperation with partners such as Felix-Fechenbach-Berufskolleg) were introduced, such as the MnSCU Island Project on Second Life and Virtual Northstar, a new project utilizing Sun Microsystem's Darkstar, Wonderland, and JVoiceBridge technologies to build an educational metaverse. The project is based on open source software and centered around the 3D web.
