UNESCO Dakar launches regional TVET Platform in West Africa

UNESCO’s International Institute for Educational Planning (IIPE) office in Dakar, Senegal, launched a regional platform for TVET experts in November. The Platform of Expertise in Vocational Training for Africa (Plateforme d’expertise en formation professionnelle pour l’Afrique – PEFOP) is financed by the French Development Agency AFD, and it will support the implementation of TVET policy reforms in sub-Saharan Africa and strengthen public and private actors in charge of their implementation.

With the establishment of this platform, UNESCO will aim to address two major challenges: supporting growth and promoting the integration of young people in the labour market. In its first phase and over four years, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania and Senegal will benefit from the support of the platform. To promote and share good practices, a broader network of countries and stakeholders involved in TVET policy reforms will also be included.

A two-day conference was held from 2 to 3 November 2015 in Dakar and attended by about a hundred TVET experts from the region. It aimed to present the aims and goals of the platform, and participants had the chance to come together and discuss some of the main issues the PEFOP aims to address.

The workshop was opened by Cheickh Sadibou Dia, Secretary-General for TVET of Senegal’s Education Ministry, Marie-Pierre Nicollet, Director of Human Development AFD, Deputy Director of IIEP Paul Coustère and Shyamal Majumdar, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC. In his keynote address, Mr Majumdar contributed the expertise of UNESCO-UNEVOC in building and maintaining international networks in TVET, as it has been managing the UNEVOC Network, an active network of TVET institutions from all across the globe, since 1993. He also highlighted the important role VET and skills development can play for achieving the global development goals.

On the afternoon of 3 November, Alix Wurdak of UNESCO-UNEVOC ran a workshop on networking and knowledge sharing through UNESCO-UNEVOC’s online services. The workshop was attended by about twenty TVET experts from Senegal and West Africa. It was also an occasion to brief UNESCO-UNEVOC Network members from the West African group on recent developments taking place at the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Bonn.
