UNEVOC Centre hosts International Symposium on TVET Personnel in Magdeburg, Germany

On the 25 and 26 November, 2015, 90 experts convened at an international Symposium on TVET for sustainable development in Magdeburg, Germany. Organised by the UNEVOC Centre comprising of GIZ’s Academy for International Cooperation unit (Competence Development in TVET), the University of Magdeburg and Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automatisation, in collaboration with the City of Magdeburg, the symposium discussed developments and opportunities with regards to the professionalisation of TVET personnel in international cooperation. The symposium was attended by State Secretary Marco Tullner (Ministry of Science and Economy, Saxony-Anhalt), the Managing Director of GIZ Dr. Hans-Joachim Preuß, the Counsellor Minister of the Embassy of the P.R. China Dong Qi, and Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC Shyamal Majumdar.

The symposium reinforced the message that developing personnel is essential for international cooperation in sustainable development and all participants emphasised the key role TVET plays in this regard. In his key note speech Shyamal Majumdar outlined the coming challenges for international TVET cooperation and stressed, with the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the central role TVET plays in the global development agenda. Particularly the UNEVOC Network, comprising over 200 TVET stakeholders around the world, acts as a platform for cooperation and collaboration.

The symposium also provided a platform to showcase greening TVET initiatives and provided insights into the emerging field of Green Jobs. In an altogether engaging meeting, contributors and participants from Asia, the South Caucasus region and Germany also discussed current requirements for qualifications for TVET personnel.

The symposium highlighted the need for more industry exposure and cooperation, as well as better pedagogical training.
