On 22 September 2014, Shyamal Majumdar, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC, delivered a keynote address at the 2nd International Conference of the German Research Center for Comparative Vocational Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) held in Cologne, Germany.

In his opening address, Shyamal Majumdar introduced UNESCO’s and UNESCO-UNEVOC’s work in the field of TVET, including the TVET strategy introduced in 2010 and the Shanghai Congress that took place in 2012. He highlighted the importance of TVET from four different standpoints: educational, social, technological and economic and argued that policy makers should strive to improve TVET’s quality and image and come up with more innovative ways of involving the private sector in policy design and implementation.

The three-day event gathered researchers and TVET experts from across the globe, and provided a platform for exchanging current research, projects and good practices in TVET. The conference covered a wide range of themes, including school-to-work-translation, quality assurance, TVET in the informal sector and the dual system.
