UNEVOC Centres discuss improved use of digital media at eLearning Africa

Education professionals involved in designing, providing, financing, certifying and managing education in Africa came together for discussions about technology and learning at eLearning Africa, which took place from 20 to 22 May 2015 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Co-organized by the African Union and hosted by the Government of Ethiopia, eLearning Africa is a platform for sharing good practices, making connections and gaining new ideas, from the latest research on mobile learning to smart tools for teachers.

15 representatives of UNEVOC Network members from Africa, Asia and Europe participated in two pre-conference workshop sessions organized by UNESCO-UNEVOC. Both were held in English and French simultaneously. One session on UNESCO-UNEVOC's online services had the objective of introducing UNEVOC's online tools and was designed as a participatory workshop where participants completed a set of tasks using UNEVOC's online tools.


UNEVOC workshop on ICT in TVET
The topic of the second UNEVOC workshop was “How can teachers and trainers be prepared to effectively use digital media in TVET? Sharing promising practices from the UNEVOC Network”. Participants from the UNEVOC Network, the Commonwealth of Learning and the TVET Academy identified initiatives in which ICTs for TVET were used. These were used as input for the panel discussion that followed and will serve as background for a planned handbook for teachers and trainers on the use of digital media in TVET to be published by UNESCO-UNEVOC. The discussions also proved to be a good start for the emerging “ICT in TVET” cluster of the UNEVOC Network.
In a panel discussion on the final day of the conference presenters shared a range of cases on preparing teachers and trainers to use digital media in TVET. The session was chaired by John Simiyu of the University of Eldoret (UNEVOC Centre Kenya) and featured the following speakers and presentations:

The discussions at eLearning Africa proved to be a good start for the emerging “ICT in TVET” cluster of the UNEVOC Network. The resources and experiences shared at the conference will become part of the planned handbook for teachers and trainers on the use of digital media in TVET.
