Information on TVET in Oman

TVET System

Vocational training plays an important role in preparing and qualifying citizens to meet state requirements for a qualified national labour force in various vocational and technical areas.

To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Manpower - represented by the Directorate General of Vocational Training - has developed vocational training programmes which keep abreast of the requirements of the Omani labour market for a skilled and semi skilled national workforce.

The Omani private sector has the opportunity to contribute to such training programmes to ensure that the graduates are qualified technically and vocationally, so they can boost national development in the country.

His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said has stressed the need to develop the scientific, technical and vocational capabilities of the Omani people in order to:

• help citizens take an active role in the country’s economic development
• increase the number of Omani people working in the country’s labour force
• develop people’s skills and capabilities and thereby increase job opportunities.

The Vocational Training system was established in 1984. The Ministry of Manpower runs Colleges of Technology that endeavour to deliver the knowledge and skills needed by the Omani community and required by the private sector.

The colleges focus on:

• defining knowledge and skills requirements in the Sultanate
• applying new methods to the delivery of training programmes
