On 26 January 2015, experts from the United Nations University (UNU)’s Regional Centre for Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE), Prof. Charles Hopkins, Jos Hermanns, Zinaida Fadeeva and Detlev Lindau Bank, came to UNESCO-UNEVOC to discuss joint areas of interest.
The visit provided an opportunity to learn for the two networks – RCE and UNEVOC – in terms of the different structures, roles and operating modalities, and common areas of expertise than can be shared and further developed.
The RCE Network has a grassroots approach promoting local and community-based initiatives globally. It operates autonomously, with members having their own structure and governing system, and interacting mostly virtually and through regular meetings and capacity-building activities.
The RCE Network is UNU’s implementation means for the promotion of education for sustainable development (ESD). It is facilitated by the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in Tokyo, which is also responsible for creating strategic plans for the Network. There are currently 135 members who possess a broad range of expertise in the areas of ESD, TVET and ICT.
